The Great British Christmas
In researching European Christmas markets, we found out that England has some wonderful ones, and didn't want to miss a chance to share some of them with you. Each location also has wonderful Freebird Hosts to welcome you to their Winter Wonderland.
London is a fantastic city to visit, especially at Christmas. Rose is ideally placed to show you what's what in this city that never sleeps. Southbank Centre market has chalets selling gifts and crafts. Stop a while and enjoy the carol singers and soak up the atmosphere. Leicester Square is home to a wonderful grotto, a Spiegeltent, and quirky stalls with lots of Christmas goodies. Visit the famous Hyde Park (pictured) and you will be met with a huge array of stalls showcasing everything you could want to make the festive season special. There are two circuses on site, as well as an ice rink for the energetic amongst you. There is even an ice bar where everything is made of ice. Take in a show or a tour of the city while you are here, or even shop in Spitalfields or Oxford Street. You could stay in London for a year and do something different every day!
A little Freebirdie told us that Manchester has the best award winning Christmas market in the UK! From November 9th to December 22nd, with 300 stalls spread out around the city, offering a huge array of Christmas gewgaws, and an abundance of food and drink. Enjoy bratwurst, goulash, paella, or traditional hog roast, with lots for vegetarians too. There's also a vegan Christmas festival this year with an a wide choice of vegan street food, vegan wines and cocktails. There are also numerous stalls selling vegan gifts for all tastes. Visit a vegan winery while you are there and indulge in a tasting of the offerings. You can ask our local host Isabel for more information for your visit.
Now to visit Carol in Birmingham. Historically, Birmingham is a medieval market town, so the Christmas Market fits naturally into the city. One of the largest outdoor Christmas markets in the United Kingdom, nestled between the Town Hall and Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery, you can soak up the sites and artistic culture of the city at your convenience. Birmingham is also the home of Cadbury's chocolate and for the curry lovers amongst us, the Balti-Triangle - imagine! The market encapsulates the ambience of traditional Bavaria combined with classic English hospitality. How wonderful - you get the best of both worlds here.
On now to the beautiful city of Bath, a World Heritage Site no less. This city is famed for its Roman baths and beautifully maintained architecture and crescents of houses with surrounding parkland; it is a joy to visit. Bath at Christmas time is a jewel in the South West of England. The market is distinctly British with stalls selling local artisan products of a very high quality. There's also a lovely romantic atmosphere set in the picturesque streets surrounding the Abbey (pictured). Send a message to Philippa if you would like a more relaxed Christmas experience in this ancient English city.
