Hello again,

I have gotten a second wind which means it's time to grab the bull by the horns and venture to the Kingdom (Irish people will know what I mean). It's not that we have a monarchy in our midst, but the Kingdom refers to County Kerry in the south-west. The motorway system is so good now that Kerry is within easy reach from most parts of Ireland by car, and a beautiful trip on the train, too. Kerry is a gem, famous for culture, the Ring of Kerry, rugged coastline and spectacular scenery and football! Kerry is also home to the highest mountain range in Ireland; the Mcgillicuddy Reeks. Even the name is romantic.

First stop will be Killarney to stay with Breda. Killarney is a buzzing town, full of restaurants and bars. A visit to Muckross House, situated in Killarney National Park is a must. Take a jaunt in a horse-drawn carriage and be entertained by a jarvey. These guys are more than drivers; they are brilliant storytellers.

Next, to Killorglin and Owen's house. Killorglin is the gateway to the Ring of Kerry, and also known for Puck Fair, Ireland's oldest fair, where the goat is king (and people act the goat!). Take the Killorglin Town History trail. Owen will be happy to give you the inside track on where to eat and what to do. There's nothing like local knowledge. There are plenty of walking trails around the area and lots of pubs with live music sessions. Cahersiveen is full of historical sites, including the Daniel O'Connell memorial church and the Old Barracks.

Barbara is close by, in Dooneen, an active member of the community and with lots of ideas for things to do. Dooneen is on the Skelligs coast, Star Wars fans will recognise the Skellig Islands from the latest movie, but these mythical islands (a world heritage site) did not need Hollywood to put them on the map. Kerry is the green and gold standard in Irish tourism, there is something for everyone. Time to pack my bags for the road back to Dublin, but I’ll have more for you soon.
